A longtime fan of Hollow Knight, I’ve found excitement and torment in waiting for Hollow Knight: Silksong. Finally, this is our chance to play as Hornet, Hallownest’s quick and deadly princess-protector. This time we’re not wandering the ruins of Hallownest, but stepping into a never-before-seen kingdom named Pharloom - a place of silk and song and deadly secrets.

A princess held captive in a land unknown to them

Hornet is captured and taken away from Hallownest to begin her tale. She lands in Pharloom, a kingdom of both loveliness and peril. She’s here to scale the citadel at the top, solving puzzles along the way and finding out why she was brought here to begin with.

The story is exceptional for how it is told. As in the first game, most of this is obscured in the game’s environment, locked behind NPC conversations, or often referenced in the game world itself. As a player, I like to assemble those broken slices - it’s sort of like a mystery where everywhere you look, there’s a secret.

Fast and lethal combat – killing in the blink of an eye

Hornet is also quicker and more mobile than the original game's Knight. She jumps, sprints, clings, and twirls with flair. The combat is more like a dance - you need to keep your wits, read enemy patterns, and attack when appropriate.

Hornet instead uses Silk, rather than Soul. Healing is gentler, faster now - you can even heal while moving - but you have to be careful about running low on silk. Instead, when you die, you leave a silken cocoon, not a shadow as in the original. Breaking it restores your silk.

More Than 200 New Enemies, Over 40 New Bosses. There are 200-plus brand new enemies and 40-plus never-before-seen bosses required to beat the boss-battle-only mode. With assassins and hunters to giant beasts and kings, skill and patience are required in every battle. Man, honestly, this makes all the encounters feel so rewarding when you win.

Tools, Crafting, and New Systems

The most notable change from Hollow Knight, though, is the all-new crafting system. Hornet isn’t a Knight and does not make use of charms. Instead, she can create tools - items including bombs, traps, and special weapons. These are craftable from enemy drops.

This system allows you to play the element of your choice. Want to be aggressive? And craft tools that do heavy damage. Want to play it safe? Lay traps to impede foes. It adds strategy to exploration and combat.

In addition to crafting, there are new currencies such as shell shards, rosaries, and crests with which you can purchase items or unlock abilities.

The World Is Wonder and Fear

Pharloom is gigantic - far larger even than Hallownest. The locations are diverse and beautiful:

  • Mossy grottoes are crawling with life.
  • Glowing forests of coral undersea.
  • Gleaming citadels on the kingdom’s heights.
  • Lakes of fire and mists of moors that challenge your ability to live, pal.

Every area is hand-drawn and gorgeously 2D, the same as the first game. The mood gets a boost from Christopher Larkin’s music, which provides evocative melodies in exploration and heart-racing rhythms in boss fights.

Quests, NPCs, and Lore

Silksong is also slightly different from the original in that it has a quest system. Types of missions are:

  • Gather (collect resources),
  • Wayfarer (help travelers),
  • Hunt (track down beasts),
  • Grand Hunt (Take on da big one).

You can follow all of these in Hornet’s quest journal, making side stories easier to follow. NPCs also play a bigger role. Some might aid you, some might deceive you, and some might tell you a piece of the lore.

Additional Challenges – Silk Soul Mode

Once you complete the game, there’s a special mode called Silk Soul Mode. Like Steel Soul mode from the first game, it’s a hardcore challenge - with new wrinkles that make it even more intense. This one is for the players who want to prove their real skill.

My Thoughts

Playing Silksong is both a homecoming to something familiar and a visit to what’s completely new. The fighting is quicker, the world is larger, and the enigmas seem weightier. Some may say it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but for me, it refines it.

The thing that excites me most is that feeling of discovery. Pharloom is alive and dangerous, and every corner seems to hide a new story. It’s a mix of speed acrobatics, toothy struggle, and haunting beauty: the game only took half a decade to make.

Final Words

Hollow Knight: Silksong is looking like one of the biggest indie games of this generation. Next talked is the September 2025 release date, and I can’t wait to explore the hell out of Pharloom, unearth its secrets, and master Hornet’s needle and thread.

For Hollow Knight fans, this seems like the next significant chapter we’ve been waiting for. For new players, it’s an ideal gateway into one of the most satisfying action-adventure games ever crafted.
