Yape is the mobile payment application of the Peruvian bank Banco de Crédito del Perú (BCP).
With it, users can send and receive money, make payments via QR code or phone number, top up mobile phones, and much more - all from their smartphone.
Key Features
Free transfers: Transfers between individuals via phone number or QR code are free.
Different account types: Depending on your bank status, there are three YaPay account types:
- With the BCP debit card
- With only a DNI (Peruvian National Identity Card)
- With accounts from other banks or savings accounts.
Payments for businesses and services: Users can pay for services and invoices, and use QR codes for business payments.
Security and integration included: Because YaPay is backed by BCP, the application benefits from institutional support. The bank has a large user base, and the digital payment channel is also integrated into the public payment system.
Who Can Use It?
Peruvian residents with a smartphone and a Peruvian phone number.
Users with a BCP account (for the "Debit BCP" account type) or a Peruvian National Identity Card (DNI) (for the "ID only" account type).
This application is primarily designed for Peruvians. Participation requirements may differ for tourists or non-residents. (Not officially confirmed for tourists.)
How it Works
Download the application from the Google Play or the Given Download button
During registration, select the account type that best suits you (Debit BCP/ID/Other Bank).
Provide the required information (phone number, ID/account information, etc.).
Make transfers, payments, or receive money via QR code.
If necessary, you can change your account type: the app supports changing from "ID" to "Debit BCP" or other account types - see FAQ.
Security and Tips
- As the app is backed by BCP (Bernese Bank of Peru), it benefits from many standard banking security measures.
- Always download Yape from the official app store and avoid APKs from unknown sources to reduce the risk of compromised/malicious versions.
- When sending money, make sure you use the correct QR code or the recipient's phone number. Payments may not be made automatically after sending.
- Keep your smartphone and app up to date to receive the latest security updates.
Why Use Yape?
- Convenience: No need for cash, just use your smartphone.
- Speed: Instant money transfers 24/7.
- Widely used: Countless businesses and individuals in Peru already use Yape.
- Flexible Account Types: Allows users without a traditional bank account to access digital payments through the “ID Only” account type.
Notes/Limitations
- If you are using the “ID Only” account type, daily or transaction limits may apply (depending on account rules). Check specific limits during registration.
- As with any financial app, there is a risk of abuse (wrong recipient, fraud) - so always verify recipient details.
- This app and its services are designed specifically for Peru; its use may be restricted to foreign residents or additional steps may be required.
- While transfers are fast, not all issues (e.g., erroneous transfers) are easily resolved - so users should exercise caution.
Summary
Yape is a user-friendly, digitally focused mobile wallet solution developed by the Central Bank of Peru (BCP). It offers fast, free transfers and extensive features (payments, top-ups, business QR codes), as well as different account types to suit a wide range of users. Yap is a powerful tool for everyday financial transactions in Peru - if you register through the right channels and use the app responsibly.
